Weight is an often, overlooked factor in getting pregnant. But studies show that preconception weight is a very significant factor. This goes both ways in the fertility department. Too far overweight or too far underweight, can delay the time it takes to get that baby started. And if you and your partner are like most hopeful parents, when you decide you want a child, you want it NOW. The benchmark is your BMI (Body Mass Index) which is a method of estimating a person’s body fat levels based upon a person’s weight and height measurement. While the BMI calculation is an indirect measurement, it has been found to be a fairly reliable indicator of body fat measures in most people. In pre-pregnancy women, a BMI of 18.5-24.9 is considered normal. 25.0-29.9 is overweight and 30 or higher is obese. What researchers discovered is that a BMI of 25.0-39 was linked to a two-fold increase in the time it took to get pregnant. And for women with a BMI below 19, conception took four times as long. Yes, you read that right, underweight women take longer to get pregnant than overweight women. But before you throw that diet out the window, read between the lines. If you are trying to have a baby, a healthy weight and normal BMI of 18.5-24.9 is your sweet spot.
