Gut Reaction to Yogurt

Of course you’ve noticed the trend. A tsunami of yogurt based products boasting efficacy in intestinal health are now currently overflowing your supermarket. So what are the facts?

blog-oct-yogurtOf course you’ve noticed the trend. A tsunami of yogurt based products boasting efficacy in intestinal health are now currently overflowing your supermarket. So what are the facts? The human digestive system contains over 500 million “good” bacteria that are vital to the breakdown and absorption of nutrients in food. They also promote digestive health and help boost your immune system. But to work, they need to be alive. So just eating any old yogurt (especially hypersweetened, over processed, fruity-flavored stuff) probably won’t give you anything but calories and/or cavities.

For a true health benefit, look for the least processed products containing Lactobacillus Bacteria (L. Gasseri, L. Johnsonii, L. Lactis, L.Casei, L. Reuteri, L. Acidophilius) and Bifidobacteruum (B. Bifidum, B. Lactis, B. Breve, B. Longus). This may not sound very delicious, but these are the active guardians of gut health. Without them, you will merely be ingesting highly processed milk puddings.
