October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual nationwide campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women in the US besides skin cancer, and the second most common cause of death from cancer. But, thanks to improvements in treatment and awareness, women are getting screened earlier and treated before the cancer becomes too aggressive.
This month reminds us of the importance of knowing your body and regularly screening yourself for diseases that may not show symptoms right away. For women, this includes well woman exams offered by their gynecologists, and recommended to be done yearly. This includes pap smears and breast exams. Women are encouraged to get mammograms every two years after age 50, but for women who have breast cancer in their family this may need to be started soon. The more you know about your body the better equipped you will be to get screened and find diseases early.
