Uterine Fibroid Embolization and Fertility Rates

A study released by the Society of Interventional Radiology proved that Uterine Fibroid Embolization fertility rates are comparable to myomectomy.

A recent article released by the Society of Interventional Radiology demonstrated comparable fertility rates between the two primary uterus-sparing treatments widely available to treat fibroids: uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) and surgical myomectomy .  This information is particularly significant due to the fact that previous studies have suggested that myomectomy is preferred over UFE for women that want to keep their fertility options open.  However, based on the data provided from this study, researchers as well as healthcare providers can now confirm that the same fertility benefits apply for both procedures.

In this study with a sample population of 743 women, UFE had a fertility rate of 58.1 percent, which is comparable to surgical fibroid removal (myomectomy), and a fertility rate of 57 percent.  The study also found that women that underwent embolization had normal pregnancies with similar complication rates as the general population in spite of being deemed a “high risk group”.  Therefore, those women that treated their fibroids with UFE not only shared the advantage of a less invasive treatment, but were also able to have normal pregnancies with little risk of complication. The study further touted  the effectiveness of UFE and its safe and effective approach to treatment for uterine fibroids, specifically when presented with traditional surgical options such as hysterectomy and myomectomy.

Dr. João Martins Pisco, an interventional radiologist at St. Louis Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, stated that UFE will probably be a first-line treatment option in the future even for women who wish to conceive and are unable due to the presence uterine fibroids.  He also emphasized that although the possibility of infertility may arise, as with any treatment type, the treatment of UFE is safe, effective and successful at treating fibroids and fibroid symptoms.
