I want to get the Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), but will it work for me?

The answer to this question depends on your individual situation. If uterine fibroid embolization (also know as Uterine Artery Embolization or UAE) is to be effective, you must consider the following:

First, your symptoms have to be caused by a fibroid. This may seem like an obvious point, however not every woman with excessive bleeding or pain has fibroids, and not every fibroid causes symptoms. Therefore, you must be diagnosed with fibroids in order to be considered for UFE.

Second, your symptoms should be significant enough that they are impacting your quality of life. Although UFE is minimally invasive, it is still a medical procedure with potential complications. One should not have the procedure, unless the fibroids are causing uncomfortable symptoms and having the procedure would positively impact your quality of life.

Third, there should be no other medical condition that makes hysterectomy a more appropriate option. For instance, if you also have a known or suspected malignancy in your cervix, ovaries, or uterus, then UFE is not appropriate as a stand-alone treatment.

To be sure that each of these issues is addressed, every woman considering the procedure must be completely evaluated by their OB-GYN to access whether fibroids are present and if they are a good candidate for the UFE procedure.  If these criteria are met, then UFE may be an optimal choice.
